The MacGuffin: The Object That Doesn't Matter (Global Lens Ep. 1)

Watch the episode:

Everybody remembers the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. Nobody can tell you what was in it, because the movie never says, and that is exactly why it works.

Alfred Hitchcock had a name for that kind of object. He called it the MacGuffin: the thing every character in a story is desperate to get, and that the audience does not actually need to understand. It motivates. It moves people across rooms and borders. Then the credits roll and you realize you never learned what it was.

Hitchcock’s best one was not an object at all

North by Northwest, 1959. Cary Grant plays Roger Thornhill, an ad man who gets mistaken for a government agent named George Kaplan. He spends the film running across the country trying to find Kaplan and clear his own name.

Kaplan does not exist. He never did. US intelligence invented him on paper to pull attention away from the agent they were actually protecting. Thornhill is chasing a filing cabinet.

That is the device at its purest. Hitchcock took the empty center of a story and made it a man, then built two hours of real danger on top of nothing at all. The plot runs perfectly. It just runs on a rumor.

Why the empty center works

Once you see it, you see it everywhere. The One Ring. Whatever artifact Indiana Jones is digging for this time. The briefcase.

What they have in common is that the object is a motor, not a message. The story was never about the thing. It is about who you become while you chase it: who you lie to, what you risk, who you turn out to be when it is finally in your hands.

Try this on your next project

Leave the briefcase shut. If you are writing something with a MacGuffin in it, resist the draft where you explain what is inside. That explanation almost never makes the story bigger, and it usually makes it smaller. Your audience will fill the space with something more frightening than anything you could have written.
