Camera Techniques Workshop at Belmont World Film's Family Festival

January 21, 2024•1 min read

On January 21, 2024, as part of Belmont World Film’s 21st Family Festival, we led the Intro to Film Camera Techniques Workshop at Belmont Media Center. The session was open to kids 10 and up and covered core camera techniques along with some rarely used ones that give foreign films their distinctive style.

About 30 students came, mostly middle schoolers plus three high schoolers, and most worked with the phone already in their pocket. We started with the basics: how framing changes meaning, why a close-up feels different from a wide shot, and how to plan before you press record. Then students split up, built their own shot lists, and went out to capture them, thinking about the story each sequence was telling.

It was a good reminder that the barrier to filmmaking isn’t gear. It’s knowing you’re allowed to start.

Belmont World Film brings international cinema to Greater Boston all year, and its Family Festival returns every January.
