What a $5,000 Mass Cultural Council Grant Made Possible
In August 2025, the Mass Cultural Council awarded Ineffable Films a $5,000 Creative Experiences grant for our Interactive Audiovisual Experience Series: free, hands-on media arts experiences where young people don’t just watch, they make. It was our first state arts grant.
When we applied, we described a much bigger long-term vision and said this grant would fund the first piece of it. Here’s what that first piece became over the grant year, July 2025 through June 2026.
A screening, and a classroom
In October 2025, we partnered with Cambridge Community Television (CCTV) on Project Dracula, a community screening of Matt McGee’s global remix of Bram Stoker’s novel, paired with a hands-on production session. About 40 young people took part as makers, not just audience, learning the craft behind the camera: story, lighting, sound, and editing.
Inside a real studio
On January 20, 2026, we brought roughly 40 students from Enroot into Emerson College’s film and television studios for a guided, on-set experience. Afterward, Enroot’s Laura Montoya wrote to thank us for the field trip, saying the students were truly happy and excited about the experience.
A tool that outlasts the grant
We built and launched TreasureMap, an app that helps young filmmakers find filming-friendly locations in their own communities. It’s live, in use, and mapping new areas for future events.
A community that keeps growing
The work also seeded Open Hours, our free online community for emerging filmmakers, now about 400 members strong with a live session every Sunday. What started as one screening became a place young people keep coming back to.
By the numbers
About 80 youth and community members reached in person, all for free
About 400 more engaged online through Open Hours
Close to 500 people reached in total
About 10 experienced media professionals who mentored and produced as volunteers
Roughly $15,000 in donated time, space, and equipment on top of the grant, turning $5,000 into about a $20,000 effort
What comes next
This first phase built the partnerships, the tool, and the community the full series will grow from. Next, we’re bringing free film education and community screenings to more Massachusetts towns through their Local Cultural Councils, and this time building in stipends so local filmmakers get paid for their work.
Thank you to the Mass Cultural Council for taking a chance on a young organization, and to CCTV, Emerson College, Enroot, and every volunteer who made it happen.
This project was supported in part by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
